I am pointing out an exception...
I work for a local government unit. My boss (a mayor) believes in open source and that's why we are migrating our desktops to Ubuntu Linux and giving away computers to schools with Ubuntu Linux installed on it.
Hi Dave,
I am happy to read this mail about your boss embracing FOSS. May I know if its ok where are you and who is your boss? My work makes me deal with LGUs and Mayors in Bohol most of the time.
We are an NGO working for marine conservation together with the LGU and local NGOs and peoples' organizations. Your story or perhaps even inviting your boss to speak about FOSS in a meeting of LGUs here in Bohol would be very nice to organize in the near future.
I have been in development work for almost a decade now. I am attracted to Linux or FOSS because I find it another venue for the struggle for social change--a struggle for freedom from expensive softwares just for the poor cooperatives and LGUs use computer and a struggle for freedom of information and technology.
If ever I would have a chance to be involve in Linux/FOSS advocacy it would be in the area on "making FOSS work for poor sectoral organizations and LGUs in the countryside".
Keep up the nice work there in your LGU. :-)
