And there are other (untold, unpublicized) stories, too, of how
schools are very interested / have taken the plunge / are thriving in
FOSS.

Hey, maybe we can turn this discussion on its head (and probably stop
the flood of me-too, same-here stories): why not y'all folks out there
trade in your anecdotes of FOSS adoption (planned, ongoing,
successful) in schools? In the PLUG site, perhaps, if not in the list
(in a new thread, of course)?

In my school, De La Salle-Canlubang, we ditched MS Office for OOo. The college computers are now dual-boot with Windows and Mandriva Linux. I think we're migrating to Linux. Also, I think the other Windows servers were removed and replaced with a Linux+Squid+DansGuardian proxy. My guess is that there's only one MS server left which serves our online enlistment running on ASP.

There's also a professor for a BM/BA course recommending OOo Calc over MS Excel and uses it for the class' exercises and hands-on stuff.

Another smaller thing to take note of is that the IT admins are using the penguin wallpapers on Windows boxes. Haha

Come on, that's a more positive approach, I think, instead of ranting
(which, by the way, is sometimes good, I think) and venting steam,
etc. And, folks, relax. :)
