Sorry if this may seem like a late reply. I'm catching up on my mail, its been a busy week for me. I've tried the following:

Mandriva 2006 Live (official), MCNLive - Jordaan, PCLinuxOS 0.92, Knoppix 3.9, Ubuntu and Kubuntu Live 5.10, Damn Small Linux 2.0, SLAX Live CD 5.0.6 (Kill Bill Edition), BeatrIX 2005.1F, Puppy Linux 1.0.6, SystemRescueCD 0.2.15

In my opinion, Puppy offers the best all-around user experience with a small footprint. DSL is faster, though the graphics aren't as good.

The SLAX version I used is a bit bloated through. Kill Bill Ed. uses KDE-Light and already has Wine running by default. MCN-Live is fast too, but uses Opera for a browser. BeatrIX is also nice, like a stripped down Ubuntu as it uses a Gnome desktop. BeatrIX actually runs best on mini-itx (info here: http://www.via.com.tw/en/initiatives/spearhead/mini-itx/). That's the reason the guy behind it built the distro. All I can say is if you're used to Ubuntu, you will find BeatrIX familiar and fast. Please note though that for these three, I have not used them in any machines that do not have hard drives, so speed may be subjective. I'd suggest getting at least another 128mb for each of your machines before trying  them.

That's my (mini) round-up c",)  Happy tuxing!

damn small linux is light, fast and has all what I need in the desktop. I put it in a mini-cd and place it my work bag so that anytime I need to work, I just pop in the mini-cd into the cdrom and start working.
