I think the later versions of WRT54G can't be flashed with openwrt or hyperwrt. I think it was version 4 and up. Can someone please verify?

Yes, that is correct.  I've been using a Cisco/Linksys WRT54g router to
do roughly the same thing (my sister's room is downstairs and mine is
upstairs, that saved cabling), and I'll give it a recommendation, as
it's reasonably cheap (3k or so) and you can later flash it so you can
access the embedded GNU/Linux.  Since we're both using laptops with
integrated WiFi, I can't really make recommendations as to what WiFi
cards you can buy, especially for desktops.  The Prism/Orinoco chipsets
seem to be the best supported by GNU/Linux, and PCMCIA versions of cards
that used them were what I used with my old laptop, which didn't yet
have integrated WiFi capability.
