Just some time ago Jeff Bailey blogged about this.[0] I pretty much feel
the same; I have my fears about what the future holds for me and my
involvment on FOSS itself, but I realize that recognizing the problem is
the first step towards a solution, and I hope that, little by little,
the Linux desktop will progress, even as the chasm gapes wider.
Don't despair... there's always OS X/Darwin... ;-)
Linux is way too mature and entrenched for Darwin to unseat
in the near future, but I wonder how much of Linux's air supply
will Darwin eventually suck out now that the latter is going to
be x86-focused.
Can we expect devices to be better supported under Darwin-x86 than
Linux?
Highly unlikely, but that can be a remote possibility if vendors would
pitch in.
