My question is: Is there a better alternative to
Samba? I'd like to hear from those who have
implemented other network file sharing (NFS, WebDAV,

In order of preference:

 - Samba. still.
 - NFS

Personally both have been used and implemented in production servers
for large companies and the government.

if you are going for OpenAFS, Double Check if you can support,
administer and backup it in your existing infrastructure. It's
intricate to Administer.
Yes.

Check main advantages/disadvantages over NFS/NIS/SAMBA here and be
clear as to the reasons why you'd prefer one from the other. You be the
judge if it's that intricate to manage and administer.

The good place to double check is here http://www.angelfire.com/hi/plutonic/afs-faq.html. (Caution www.transarc.com is no longer the original. It is now an address used by XXX
rated site. It's change to http://www.transarc.ibm.com/Product/EFS/AFS/).

Good luck.
