2MB!? Are you wearing helmets when you surf? LOL!

There are a lot of factors involved in maximizing your connection speed: physical considerations and software applications to name a few.

A Linux router is one good solution. You can setup your own firewall rules and traffic shaping. And as discussed in another thread here, there are different ways of accomplishing this.

So the answer is both yes and no. Yes, a linux router is capable to help you with this. And no, it is not enough on its own.
