> Hi everybody. I was wondering if anybody can suggest an easy way to
install the latest debian in a laptop? I have gone over the the debian site
and downloading 17 ISO images is quite a waste of bandwidth for me. I have
ubuntu installed in this system and wanted to test debian for about a month
to learn about it. Is it possible in debian to have a "server" type install
like in ubuntu and later download and install the apps that I want to use?

wilson,

Hi Wilson,

Debian was meant to do exactly what you're thinking of doing. Like Jan
mentioned you don't need to download all the CDs. Just get the first
one if you can manage the bandwidth (its still about 650+ MB) or
alternatively get the smaller network install ISO or business card ISO
and use those.

When you boot from the CD, type in expert26 (expert prompts you during
each stage of the installation process, 26 means you are installing
the stock 2.6.8 kernel or its variants, use the Fn keys for more
info) so you can really pick and choose your setup. After the first
reboot, you will eventually reach a screen which will prompt you for
what type of setup you would like (server, workstation, etc.)

Needless to say, if you choose to use the network install ISO or
business card ISO, you need an internet connection.

Happy installing!
