[plug] dovecot problem

my current setup is postfix as mta and dovecot as imap server, it's my first time to use dovecot as imap server, however i'm having difficulty configuring it, i tried everything that google found but to no avail. here is the result when i telnet dovecot:

mail# telnet localhost 143
Trying ::1...
telnet: connect to address ::1: Connection refused
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.sample.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
* OK Dovecot ready.
login [EMAIL PROTECTED]
login BAD Error in IMAP command received by server.

i tried imap_listen = localhost, end result connection refused.

any idea as to what is wrong with my dovecot.conf?
