Need some help here fellows...

I just installed Ubuntu Dapper in a P4 2.8G/1GB/40GB
machine and uncharacteristically is slow. I tried
Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and even the Ubuntu Server, and all
have the same response time.

Booting takes around 5 minutes where I was expecting
around less than a minute. It is taking 1 minute for
the kernel to load, initialize and do whatever it does
at bootup. Then around 2.5 minutes at the "Loading
Hardware Drivers" stage. And then it spends another 1
minute at loading hald.

Login seems slow too.

Booting up X and Gnome/KDE is slow. Starting a
program in Gnome/KDE takes more than a minute, as
well.

I searched UbuntuForums. I saw several threads that
suggests using acpi=off and noapic. Tried it. No
dice. I'll search some more.

I would very much appreciate your inputs.

Cheers!
