It depends on what filesystem you're using. If you're using ext3, JFS, or XFS, you're SOL. There is no way to shrink those kinds of filesystems short of backing up everything on them, recreating the filesystem, and copying the old data back in. You *may* have a chance if you're using reiserfs or ext2, you might have a chance, but in my experience, this rarely works as planned. I followed the instructions in [1] carefully (I use reiserfs), and yet I still managed to lose a lot of data. But hey, you're trying to resize /var/log, so data loss there can't be too painful.
