see why you would rather send a 160 - 480char SMS to email while MMS can
send 1000 chars + attachment. doing the reverse is also readily supported by
telcos.

For one, there are still phones out there with only the basic SMS. For
another -- and I have to do some arithmetic here -- it's still one
peso per SMS, compared to PhP15 per MMS. IOW, it's 15x the cost for
less than 10x the character length. Granted, that doesn't include the
length of the attachment, but how long can an MMS attachment be?
