here's an email from Mr. Ted Edward Ferreras, a student who will be writing a news feature about the release of Windows Vista. your insights will be greatly appreciated.

1. Microsoft Windows and Linux are two major competing computer operating systems, what makes the former better than the latter, vice versa?

there is a huge difference technically between windows and linux. which is superior depends on what basis are we talking about? does crashing more ranks high on the list? user interface? number of apps? developer tools? no viruses? no spyware? there are myriad different ways to answer, which platform is superior.

linux on the other hand is free, not as in free beer but anybody can get a chance to use it, to contribute to it, to improve the software or use it in the manner that you need or want it to be. you can't say the same thing about windows.

2. Microsoft will be launching Windows Vista, their latest version of the Windows operating system in five years. How will it impact the current trend in computer operating systems?

you should see the banners they have over at apple's world wide developer's conference. "Mac OSX Leopard: Vista 2.0"

look at hardware changes to set the pace of the industry, specifically the new multicore and 64-bit products from amd and intel. vista will be the last operating system to switch to 64-bit (and no i didn't count the 64-bit windows xp thingy) and for many PC users will signal by default, the general computer market's move to 64-bit software and the advantages of multiprocessors. (linux users have been on 64-bit since amd64). this window is crucial (and ends in 2008)--- for linux or any contender to windows' throne to take advantage of and move users off the microsoft kool-aid.

vista is a logical step for microsoft. will people be buying box copies of windows vista? probably not in doves. people who will be getting PCs which come with the new Vista preloaded will benefit from it.

as for graphics trend, xgl over at linux is bringing really cool stuff to linux desktops. transgaming has some excellent gaming options for linux users of windows games.

3. Can Linux conquer the computer operating system industry? What makes it any different from Windows?

again this is a difficult question to answer.  if you mean by gaining market share? that would really depend on a lot of issues some of which may not be important to all the people who could use linux.  it really is about market forces.  what is holding people back from linux adaptability? user interfaces that are not as easy as in windows or in the mac? lack of multimedia support for example you simply can't just plug in an ipod into a linux off the rack and expect it to work as good as in windows or in a mac?  how about playing dvds, will that be required? how about support..? we have red hat, novel, etc. etc providing excellent linux support. is that database that your company uses run on linux or do you simply just need a browser? what will be driving people to linux? the price? the fact it runs old hardware better than windows xp? will we ever see corporations standardize on linux? some already have. nasa's jpl for instance is on linux. so many factors really and depend on your point of view.

linux is different because it is built on the idea that the underlying source code is freely available and that any change to it that you do--- has to be shared with everyone in the same manner you've gotten the code. the way linux has been built over the years is on the shoulders of the hacker ethos--- build it because it is fun, because you need that kind of solution. linux can simply be just the "kernel" because everything around it is built upon years of unix code--- from the file system to bash to the compilers... so a linux distro is a house built on different parts. windows on the other hand is built entirely by microsoft and they have their own ecosystem.

4. Which operating system is most fit/advisable for computer users in the Philippines?

again that is dependent on one's point of view, one's budget, on one's requirement.  what are you looking for? what are the mission parameters? what are your tastes? what are you going to use it for?

we can easily say, buy windows if you use that must have app that runs only in windows.
we can easily say, buy a mac--- great user experience with the power of unix; it looks good with more value and priced the same as windows and it rarely crashes and can run your must have windows app.
we can easily say, get linux it has the power of unix, it is freely available, runs or have equivalent apps to run your apps, not like free beer and unlike windows is free from viruses and some windows apps using wine or virtualization.

at the end of the day your budget and to a certain degree, taste is going to decide for you and whether or not you'd say yes to piracy or not.

a computer is a tool--- which works for you and not the other way around.

my two cents.
