It is actually the fact that they are using a proprietary document
format is what irks me. True that OpenOffice.org can open the files
but can it render it accurately? I really doubt it.

Playing the devil's advocate, you don't really need actual MS Office
to open the documents in MS formats on windows. You just need the
viewers really. They actually work with wine even.
Editing them is another story.
