When you delete a file with open file handles pointing to it, the kernel doesn't actually completely delete the file. In fact, it may be possible to recover it from /proc. IIRC, the kernel won't actually free those blocks until then. This is all AFAIK and IIRC, from a post I read on Planet Gnome (IIRC) some months back.
