Get the Linksys WRT54G and flash it with DD-WRT - boost the transmit power and you will get better coverage. I have installed DD-WRT v23sp2 and it is stable.

it will be used inside our stores for hand held pda connectivity for inventory purposes. would it be safe to assume that transmit power for the linksys should be sufficient since i can buy up to 7 units vs 1 cisco unit? my main concern is reliability and durability. if the linksys units break down more often, then its probably not worth the savings. the model we currently purchase is the aironet 1100.

Does anyone have first hand experience on the differences between a Cisco Wireless vs. a regular Linksys. Pricing on the Cisco Aironet 11 MBPS access point with high-gain antenae is about seven times more. BTW, we aren;t doing anything special with the equipment...just wireless access. Thanks.

CISCO's Aironet has better reception and often-times more transmit power although it's not for last-mile connectivity, some standard enterprise features like EAP, RADIUS, etc, as well as support for some extended functionality when combined with their software. Otherwise, it's pretty standard.

Some would say that the Linksys WRT has flakey connectivity, although YMMV.

Is it for indoor or outdoor use? What Aironet AP model are you evaluating?
