Here is my version, more detailed and more imaginative:
Microsoft loves to see Java fail ASAP so that they can squeeze more money from .NET. As long as Java is more cross platform than .net, .net can't win.
But with the help of Novell working on Mono, Microsoft sales-talker can now say to the world, "Hey people out there! .NET can also run on Unix! Come on people, try .NET/Mono, you can even use it with your Linux servers."
Then after the world gains experience with .NET on Unix through Mono, and after many software applications are created for the Mono platform, Microsoft will be very very happy; they will put a celebration party for their success on pushing .net to the world. And during the party, Microsoft marketting arms, while drinking beer, will discuss their next marketting strategy: (1) to tell to the world that .NET applications run better on Windows server, and (2) spread FUD against Mono so that people will turn to Microsoft and buy their softwares.

To push dot.net to unix/linux level? Novell is prime supporter of mono
