i read the article and my understanding is that they are only

implementation of the java standard, or are they just forks of the
sun implementation?

Correction please. The Java Community Process controls the
specification. Sun heads most of the JSRs but unlike closed
standards, Sun listens to the community.

thank you for that answer/correction. i am not saying i know much about the jcp but am only basing my questions on what i have read that sun has a substantial stranglehold (re:not absolute but very influential) on what passess through the process. that may be fud so i would take your answer to mean that the whole facet java development could now be completely community driven. :)

WHEN they open source Java ME, SE and EE, the community will have more say, of course.
