One trick that may work in this situation (re: fast DNS resolution) is to build 
a dns caching server within the mail server.

Fastest in terms of what? Will your MTA box be separate from your db? Make sure 
that your DNS responds pretty quickly since this can affect your MTA 
performance as well.
