Last time I checked (a few kernel versions ago) it was <1G.

With the sluggishness I encountered, recompiling the kernel using the other 
settings did not help.  I actually did a lot of kernel recompiling using 
various config settings then just to isolate the problem.

Just curious. Isn't there an option in the 2.6 kernels setting the
memory of the PC to say < 1G vs. 1G to 4G vs. > 4G? Which of these
settings come as default in Ubuntu kernels?
