It seems the biggest X86 box you can buy at sane prices is the Sun
Fire X4600, with 8 dual-core Opteron processors. Even an HP DL585 with
4 dual-core Opteron 8220's (2.8GHz) running Linux, runs rings (3X
speed) around a pSeries with 4 dual-core POWER5+ at 1.6GHz at a much
much lower cost.
Here at work, the pSeries boxes run on AIX 5L LPARs, Sun Fires on
Solaris (no virtualization, though), and the HP DLs on VMWare ESX
(with SLES 10 guests). Haven't done any performance comparison (it
would be like comparing apples to oranges at this point, heh).
But the folks here are leaning more towards VMWare, I think, while
retaining a significant portion of the servers on LPAR.
