Well, it's a complicated question, and depends on what you mean by
"support".  If you mean that HP/Compaq will support you if you try to
use GNU/Linux then the answer is an absolute no, no way in hell, not as
long as Microsoft's OEM licensing deals remain as they are.

Now, if you mean by "support" that you'll get a usable GNU/Linux system
on that hardware, then that's a more complicated question. I've never
failed to install GNU/Linux on a laptop before, but I've also never
ever completely succeeded in getting all of the hardware built into
a laptop I've owned to completely function under GNU/Linux.  All of the
four laptops I've owned over the past ten years have had internal
modems, and I've never ever been able to get even one them to function
under GNU/Linux. My present laptop also has a SD/MMC/MS/SM card reader
built into it, and no dice with getting that otherwise very convenient
built-in peripheral to work. The wireless chipsets in my present and
prior laptops only work with ndiswrapper.  This will most likely be
the case with the laptop you're planning to get as well.
