i dont know about JDeveloper/JBuilder but much of Eclipse's bloat has something to do with the fact that Eclipse is really a framework and the editor just happened to be a byproduct. somebody could excise a lot of the bloat if they dont need it but the problem is that nobody can predict what would really be needed thus a huge core functionality (plugin) is built-in. the Eclipse IDE is a perfect example of a 'product' engineered with standards and OOP in mind, with a bit of pseudo-intelligence built-in but at the cost of some bloat and performance hit. at this age where processing power and harddrive cost are decreasing, some have decided it is a good trade-off. btw, linux: vim, windows: pspad (which is the closest thing to a free ultra-edit that i can find). <snip> ciao! -- "Programming, an artform that fights back" Anuerin G.
