It's a peeve of mine as well, although I don't mind the /dev/sd?? notation (it's better in plan9 though, with the actual device is represented as a directory, /dev/sd??/, and all the partitions, ctl, and raw bits as files under that.) It appears the /dev/disk/by-uuid/ move is part of an effort to remove dependance on /etc/fstab and use libdevmapper (?) to discover the disks/partitions. A subtle consequence of this is my swap partition being listed twice in swapon -s, and I can't quite find why this is so. Cheers, Zakame -- Zak B.
