this advice would be distro neutral:

1. check if you have properly configured grub/lilo.

2. that you are point to the right kernel, or if you need initrd, grub/lilo must point properly to it.

the kernel (and if you use initrd) can/should be found in /boot

you could use grub's commandline to verify if you have the right settings.

it could also mean a mis-configured kernel, but that would be pretty rare.
