What is your hardware configuration? Like what video card/chipset are you using? It is possible that you might be using a buggy driver (X.org) or your card has a buggy firmware. I have experienced the same thing before. Both buggy firmware and driver were the cause. Also, are you sure, you're not using VGA boot video modes? -- Gideon N.
