I use Fedora but my guess is the following:
- large community support
- support for various hardware (specially network and audio cards)
- already includes proprietary codecs like MP3
- Debian-based

I'm curious too. But some friends whom I've convinced to switch to
Linux got Ubuntu working in one pass compared to Fedora.

I haven't tried Ubuntu on my laptop (Compaq Presario X1000) but Fedora
works just out of the box since FC6. Been using it since FC3.
