You got that right, the cost are really prohibitive! Anyways why not build or use other open source firewall like Smoothwall, pfsense and monowall, it has the same capability as the appliance version of endian? Besides the only reason I know why you would like to purchase an Astaro/Endian appliance is because of the support you'll be getting. If you want logging capability of URL visited including IM's conversation logs, I suggest you use Smoothwall version 3. If you want a seamless and easy implementation of VPN, use pfsense/monowall.
