If memory serves me right, a school official had to sign some contract to be part of a similar program by PiL and MS. Not sure if it covered IP rights to training materials produced by the teachers/students. There was one school that backed out on one of the programs before though.
If you read the article, the school's case is strong. The school DID license copies of a training manual to Microsoft. Microsoft went overboard with rebranding and redistributing the manual. Not really an example of "crab mentality" but it sucks that an educational institution would rather be selfish with such material.
