I would like to ask about Amanda. Amanda are run as amanda user (right?) both in local and remote. If files to backup has only root privilege only, can still Amanda fetch the files? I have installed BackupPC and it is great. Its like an rsync with GUI. The problem is for you to be able to backup files owned by root, rsync must run by root. I don't allow root to connect directly to any servers so I'm still looking for an alternative apps.
