Sed and awk are like handguns, while Perl is like a rocket launcher. It is an overkill to use a rocket launcher in situations where a handgun would do.
Remember the Unix philosophy of solving a complicated problem using small tools that do little things, but put together in certain ways, they are able to solve the most complicated problems?
