Maybe your laptop's drive is just like mine (is it really mine?), and
actually honors region coding in the firmware, and as such Linux can't
override it.  My sister gave me a Neon Genesis Evangelion DVD set last
Christmas which I've never watched, because she bought the disks in
Australia and naturally, they're region 4 disks.  Gee, so I don't
actually own my DVD drive after all.  You'll see stuff in the system
log saying that there's a region code mismatch when you try to read the
disks if this is the problem.
