cool.  that's what the problem was.  and i think dido might benefit from that 
too.  it seems that the drive *does* honor the regioncode in firmware.  i did 
notice that in windows this switching regioncode message popped up with a 
warning that i had 4 switches left (or 3, i forget).  dido, installing 
regionset and running it might help you.

Thanks a lot.  That really helps.  as it happens, I had a stupendously bogus
workaround using windows and linux.  but this is nicer.  i may still use that 
workaround once in a while, but at least i can view dvds in linux now and not 
need to start windows every day when it's time for my son to view his animal 
and nature dvds :-).
