it's all about motivation. i'm pretty sure most of us, if not all, can contribute to the code of any open source project or even initiate one. some might have already fixed some bugs of any popular projects but are too shy(?) to submit the patch. others simply starts to loose motivation whenever they're having second thoughts on participating.
i don't think money is the issue but i'm pretty sure that bragging rights among alpha geeks can be a huge factor. i still remember being on a weekend coding marathon and it's all because of pride hehehe.
