Carlos, I'm running NSLU2 on a USB drive and below are what I gathered to minimize writes: * If you are using ext3, you can try the option "noatime" at mount point. * Turn off swap. Well, if it works on my NSLU2 @ 32Mb, you should be fine...
I don't know if you are okay with this, but you can run linux on a usb drive, swap+data on the harddrive. This way, you don't lose os+data if the harddrive have some issues. to check the physical harddrive health, i'm a fan of hard disk sentinel(HDS). free as in beer for linux, but you have to pay for windows as you are a 2nd class citizen. :) What it gives you is: * The temperature of your HDD * Estimated health in percentage. * Estimated performance in percentage. * Estimated lifetime in days your HDD will go bonkers. The best feature so far. It all does this via SMART attributes. And here is an interesting feature... it also can interrogate USB harddrives. This is good for USB Drives (HDD) as well that you bring everyday to work and you want to check once in a while the health of the HDD. Have not seen that feature in other software that I'm aware of. You can then run HDS via cron say, every 6 hours to give you a report of the health of your HDD. regards, Andre | http://www.varon.ca On Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 12:24 AM, Carlos Yu <[email protected]> wrote: > Hi, > > My carputer just arrived with Windows XP installed.
