If your VM supports VDE it might be better to use it.  You might not need to
do IPTables and VDE might be worth learning for your future VM projects.  I
have tried KVM+QEMU+VDE and it worked well on CentOS 5.2.  This is what we
use in our lab right now (Remote X + KVM + QEMU + VDE).  This setup greatly
lessens the headache of installing and reinstalling OSes depending on the
classes that are held in our lab.
