This is one crazy contest that current FOSS solutions can compete in
the first yard, but won't go beyond the second to the whole nine
yards! Current open source databases have simplistic algorithms for
indexing - it's not even worth mentioning once you need more
complicated indexes (e.g. partial indexing on dates, among other
things). Multi-dimensional queries are also a pain with either MySQL
and Postgresql - doing OLAP with these isn't for the faint of heart.

Simple enough - if your needs are simple, or esoteric enough that
Oracle won't fit (e.g. MPP) - go with Postgresql, MySQL or the other
FOSS databases, as these offer the best bang in the buck for those
configurations. The moment you need support for stuff like OLAP, OLTP
or multiple standards compliance, then get Oracle, as it will offer
the best bang in the buck for those configurations.
