Wait until April 20, and get Ubuntu 9.04 instead of the current Ubuntu 8.10. You will like Ubuntu 9.04, the best darn Linux desktop there is! Ubuntu install CDs are always for the desktop user, not for the developer. If you need to do development work, then Synaptic Package Manager is your friend - just download build-essentials and all the other stuff that you need. If you are doing Java, you have a choice of sun-java-6 or open-jdk-6. I have not yet been able to figure out the difference between the two. Oh and there is also gjc. Why does the Linux community need so many jdks?
