To have minimal CPU usage in VirtualBox, you can use a lightweight
window manager like openbox or awesome instead of Gnome or
KDE. In this way, you can use linux for pure programming and Mac for
desktop apps.  I think virtual OSs still have some issues in dealing
with low-priority background processes which are common in a
full desktop environment like KDE and Gnome. You can also
hunt which background process is using the CPU by killing them
one by one and check CPU usage when Linux is idle.
