Hi Sarah, For your groupware question, I have tried phpgroupware in the past.. You'd might want to check this project for your needs.
While for the Linux hardening inquiry, one reference I would recommend is the cisecurity.org benchmarks that has recommendations. These documents have configuration options and best practices on how to secure and harden various Linux distributions.
