What exacerbates the situation is a comment from someone on the Slackware mail list who reported the same (and similar) issues after an upgrade to 12.2. His recommendation was a complete re-installation, but I don't think that's really practical for a production system with years of data and non-distribution applications. The latter (and the libraries) are in the same filesystems and directories as are the distribution's files. Sigh.
