Dear John, If you go the VMware route, I recommend VMware Server, the 1.0.x series. While 2.0 is released, it's a resource hog. The download site for both versions is http://www.vmware.com/download/server/ . In either case, while it isn't open source, it's a "free" license which does not expire.
