We've just installed an application at work that "requires" RHEL.

The vendor rep who visited had CentOS VMWare images that he used for training
and demos of the software. The custom install script also will accept CentOS
when examining /etc/redhat_release

When is RHEL required? When support checks for it while examining the system
in the course of a support call. I am told if they find CentOS rather than
RHEL they will refuse to provide support.

The "serial numbers filed off" description is apt.
