In place upgrade? I'm not familiar with the term.

Seeing how the repositories and such are gone, I no longer have an
option to upgrade to 8.04 from the updater?

I actually discovered that I couldn't get access the repositories when I
was trying to get gparted working to format a new hdd. I was able to
use my live disc to accomplish the task, which was step one towards
backing up and upgrading the system to 9.04.

I guess I'm just confused about what my best route is at this point.
Should I download and burn a DVD and try to upgrade with that, or just
start clean? Last time I did a clean install it was after I tried to
upgrade to 8.04 and lost access to my hdd. In light of that, it seems
like I might be best off just skipping the upgrade step?

I guess all I have to lose is time by trying the upgrade...

But I know a clean install would fix my non-functioning GPU, as well.

Ah, choices...

So, if I use:

deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu gutsy main universe
restricted multiverse
deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu gutsy-updates main universe
restricted multiverse
deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu gutsy-security main
universe restricted multiverse

Will that work for installing new programs or updating those that I
already have?

Can this help me update from 7.10 to something more recent?
