Clues, clues, clues for the clueless?

I'm running Intrepid.

I'm struggling with the Ubuntu help on remote desktops. Seemingly I'm
being told how to share my Ubuntu desktop for Windows users, and how to
remote into a Windows desktop -- but I want to remote from one Ubuntu
machine to another.

As best as I can tell I should use Ubuntu's Vinagre "Remote Desktop
Viewer", but when I try to connect all I get is a brief flash and an
error window saying "Connection to host servo.local:5900" was closed.

My system log says "WARNING: Unable to find provider 'gnome-wm' of
required component 'windowmanager'"; but this comes up during boot, not
when I'm trying to connect.

Does anyone have a story on how to get this to work?

TIA
