OK, that's going over my poor little Windows-atrophied head.  I can do 
the running around to ping by IP (although I'm certain it'll work; I can 
ping other machines that have fixed IP addresses on the net).

Can you give me a quick rundown (or refer me to a web page) on just what 
to put in /etc/hosts or /etc/resolv.conf?
