The problem is not slow printing at the printer; that is, the driver is
not the issue. Once the print job gets to CUPS it is sent rapidly to
the printer which images it in less than a minute. The problem is in
the PDF reader (Okular or Adobe Reader 9.1). Okular takes about ten
minutes to send just one page of the 132 page document to CUPS; Adobe
Reader over twice that long.
