I and many others have had problems when trying to upgrade Ubuntu. I think 3-4 different upgrades for me personally have failed with all kinds of weird different symptoms that proved very hard to track down. On all of them I finally gave up and wiped the disk clean and did a fresh install of the then current Ubuntu, and each time it worked *much* better. Things just worked for the most part where with an upgrade they were broken in enough places to drive me nuts. I no longer plan on upgrading the distro, just bugs and security updates.
