That was one of the first things I tried. The resulting PDF was just as
bad as the original.

However, while waiting for a response from the creator of the document
I discovered a solution. I had earlier discovered that I could not get
output with either the PCL or PS drivers from Adobe Reader 9.1 on
Windows. Reader / Windows happily sent the file to the printer, but the
output was full of errors.

So, instead of printing to the printer from Reader / Windows I printed
to file. Windows creates .prn files instead of .ps files - not sure
what the difference is. But I do know that sending the .prn file via
lpr works great. Still no "RIP once, print many," but it RIPs so fast
that it still gives me 85% of the rated speed of the printer. I do not
understand why the PS file that I created by printing to file from
Okular on Jaunty would not output at all. Clearly, there is a
difference between the PS created by Okular and the PRN created by
Reader / Windows.

Note that I should not have had to go through all this. I still think
the original PDF is somehow messed up.
