It appears that the built-in wireless radio in the Toshiba Satellite model
L455-S5975 we just bought is exceptionally weak. While it works well while
on the desk in the office next to the AP (88-100%), it does not work 30 feet
away in the den (44% at best). It apparently also does not connect
consistenly when used at other locations offering wireless access to the
'Net. This really surprised me when I moved it between the office and the
den.

While I could add an antenna to the Linksys AP here, that won't help when
it's taken elsewhere. I have the Orinoco Gold pcmcia card that worked well
(at least here so I assume elsewhere, too) with the ThinkPad and Tecra.
Would that be a practical solution? What about a USB wireless radio?
Apparently something is needed at the laptop to boost both transmission
strength and reception sensitivity.

If an external adapter is the solution, what changes need to be made to
the system so the kernel uses the external device by default?

Any and all suggestions from you wireless experts is appreciated.

Rich
